When the Orlando Magic find out from the NBA draft lottery next week where they’ll be picking, coach Jacque Vaughn will be hoping, more than anyone, that his franchise will get to make that first selection.
That’s when all the work will begin.
There isn’t going to be a Shaquille O’Neal or LeBron James in this draft that would make a huge difference between No. 1 and 2, but coaches obviously want the option of that first pick so they can go with the player they think will fit their needs.
The best bet is that the top pick will either be center Nerlens Noel or guard Ben McLemore. There are others who might sneak in there, but most observers would be shocked if the top team did not go with one of those two guys.
The Magic, if they don’t get the first pick, would have a good chance for the second one. That would mean the player they covet the most could be gone. But again, since there’s no franchise savior out there, they’ll still have a quality pick to make. In fact, anyone in the top five could make an outstanding pick. It’s no secret that some of the best players in NBA history, most notably Michael Jordan, aren’t always the No 1 selection.
Ever since the season ended, the draft possibilities started exploding among NBA teams that would be involved in the lottery. The speculation continues until June 27 on which player the team will take although probably, within two or three weeks, the team will announce its choice.
If the Magic get the lottery pick and go No. 1, they have to decide what their top need is. Do they need a big man like Noel or a perimeter whiz like McLemore? Or is there someone else who can help them?
That’s why Vaughn should have a major say in this process. There’s no consensus No. 1, so it’s going to have to be selected by committee, with the head coach as chairman.
