Archie Goodwin will have a chance real quickly to show that the Phoenix Suns were wise or unwise with their choice they made by picking him with their first-round choice last month in the NBA draft.
Goodwin is likely to showcase his skills for the Suns and prove how smart they are when the NBA Summer League is conducted July 12-22.
The Suns have announced their roster and Goodwin heads it along with second-round pick Alex Oriakhi.
There will be several other Suns players on the team including Kendall Marshall and Diante Garrett.
This obviously is just summer league, but in past years, many rookies have flourished by getting off to a good start and then taking it over to the preseason and the regular season.
Goodwin and his teammates will have a chance for six practice sessions July 9-11 at US Airways Center with a pair of two-hour practices each day.
That’s a good way to introduce Goodwin to the grueling NBA practice schedule. The Suns will have a good test right off the bat July 13 with the Portland Trail Blazers.
Goodwin will give the Suns a good chance to see what he’s doing, but the league has a tournament style schedule this year. He and the Suns play in three games July 12-16 and then get seeded in a tournament, closing with the title game July 22.
For the NBA fans, Summer League hoops might give a chance for those that already miss the league to get back into it. Goodwin and Oriakhi need to play well so the Suns know they can count on them when preseason camp opens in the fall.
