Point Guard Jose Calderon Will Give Dallas Mavericks Veteran Leadership Next Season

Rick Osentoski- USA TODAY Sports

Point guard Jose Calderon was trapped in basketball limbo last season, but he will have a real chance to contribute this year with the Dallas Mavericks. It was one of the Mavs few offseason additions that I liked, but you have to take success where you can get it. Head coach Rick Carlisle certainly likes what he has in the Spaniard, and Dirk Nowitzki will certainly not complain about getting some help next season. You can check out Carlisle below as well.

Calderon had a busy summer and impressed me quite a bit with his play at EuroBasket. Was really great that ESPN3 broadcast most of those games and it helped me pass by many a boring afternoon. Spain ultimately fell short thanks to an astounding effort by Tony Parker and a deceptively talented France team, but Calderon should carry over some nice momentum into next season. Spain does host the World Cup next summer too, so they will definitely have a chance to redeem themselves.

In the meantime though, Calderon will have to try and help the Mavericks find their way back to the playoffs. Owner and fanboy Mark Cuban’s decision making ever since winning a championship has been suspect at best, but maybe Calderon can help bail the Mavs out a bit next season.
