NBA training camps are finally about to all be underway and the Brooklyn Nets are going to be one of the most interesting teams to watch in the preseason. Not only will it be interesting to see how well Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, Jason Terry and Andrei Kirilenko fit in with the team, but they will also be hoping to keep their veteran roster healthy.
Because of the age of some of their key rotation players heading into the 2013-2014 season, not only will it be worth the time to keep an eye on their veterans, but it’ll also be interesting to keep an eye on their training camp invites as they could potentially join the roster in the season if someone were to get hurt.
As of right now, it’s highly unlikely that any of their invites to camp will make the final roster straight out of camp. The Nets already have 15 players signed to guaranteed contracts heading into the season, which is the same number as the NBA’s maximum for a final roster. Simple logistics indicate that Brooklyn’s roster will be comprised of those 15 players.
One player to keep an eye on when looking at Nets’ camp invites, though, is 28-year-old wing Gary Forbes. According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, the guard has been invited and the general belief seems to be that he will be in camp.
Forbes has played two seasons in the league before playing in China last year. In 111 career games, Forbes has averaged 5.8 points, two rebounds, and 0.4 steals in 13.5 minutes per game. Forbes also shot 43.4 percent from the floor and 34 percent from three over his brief career.
The thing that makes Forbes potentially interesting in regards to the Nets later in the season is the age and injury history of their wings, particularly at the shooting guard position. Joe Johnson missed time last season due to a foot injury while Jason Terry and Alan Anderson are 36 years old and 30 years old, respectively, making them seemingly susceptible to injuries.
It’s obviously impossible to predict how injuries will play out over a season, but it is certain that they are always a possibility. If one were to pop up for one of the wings in Brooklyn, Forbes could be a guy that they choose to bring in for a short run with the team if he can prove himself worthy at training camp.
