Carmelo Anthony Makes No Sense By Saying He is the ‘Most Underrated Superstar’
Do you know what it means to be the most underrated superstar in the NBA?
I don’t.
I guess we should ask Carmelo Anthony, the league’s self-proclaimed ‘most underrated superstar’, of its significance. ESPN’s Chris Broussard tweeted that ‘Melo told him this at New York Knicks‘ training camp on Monday. It does not come as a surprise that he would say something like this, but I’m not sure he listened to himself before he said it because it is straight nonsense.
This statement makes no sense on multiple levels. Grammatically, it is somewhat of an oxymoron. So, you are one of the league’s best players, but amongst those players, you are not regarded highly enough? I guess it makes sense a little bit, I just don’t understand why it needs to even be said.
To me, it seems like Anthony is a little jealous of guys like MVP Kevin Durant or his Eastern Conference companions Kevin Love and LeBron James, who have been the talk of the town all summer. All of them, along with some other current players, have had great successes so far in their NBA careers, but they all still have a lot left to accomplish.
Anthony is one of the elite offensive talents in the league, but the individual hardware he has brought home is minimal. He has not won an MVP, an NBA title, nor has he been named to the All-NBA first team after any of his 11 seasons in the league. He can call himself underrated amongst the league’s best, but he has few points to back that up. I think he is regarded the way he should be. Plus, his new contract sure has $124 million worth of reasons to believe he is not underrated.
At the end of the day, this is just a pointless conversation. It does not need to even be a thought. It does not matter. He is one of the best players in current time, so he just needs to continue to work and improve. That is what Anthony does, though. He has lost weight and looks like he could be in the best basketball shape of his life. He needs to be the leader of a team going through a lot of change. There are more important things to be worrying about than this. If he has bought into Phil Jackson and Derek Fisher‘s new system like he says he has, and wants to win, then he should focus on that.
I have the utmost respect for Anthony, whose main goal is to win an NBA championship, but I feel like he goes into la la land (no pun intended) and thinks about himself at times. If there is one positive factor coming from this statement, it is the fact that he feels he has something to prove. He wouldn’t say that if he didn’t feel that way. Hopefully he comes out motivated and it translates into success for the Knicks in 2014-15.
