The Miami Heat, back in the days when LeBron James still donned No. 6 in South Beach, went into the 2013-14 NBA season with the course of action to try and save veteran guard Dwyane Wade’s legs for the postseason. That plan seemed to work to perfection until, well, it didn’t.
When the Finals rolled around and the Heat were getting trounced, a big reason why they weren’t able to put up a huge fight is the fact that Wade started to fade away. He looked like a player that couldn’t show up if he wanted to, no matter how badly the Heat needed him. Now that LeBron is no longer in Miami, there’s even less of a margin for error regarding Wade.
At the Heat’s Media Day last Friday, Wade acknowledged the fact that last year’s plan was almost a successful way of dealing with his knee issues and his age. He also brought forth his new course of action for the 2014-15 season and for life after LeBron. His goal: play all 82 games of the regular season.
That seems as ridiculous as you think it does. Wade, a player who no longer has the best and most durable player on the planet on his team, a player who will be playing a larger role for his team this season, a player who has shown noticeable physical decline recently, wants to play all 82 games in the 2014-15 season for the Heat. This after he was rested frequently last regular season and still couldn’t last throughout the postseason.
You have to admire Wade’s tenacity and the belief of this Miami team that they will be able to have the same type of success even without James, but it’s just absurd at its core. There’s no way that this team is even close to the same and it wouldn’t be an Earth-shaking occurrence if they finished the year out of the playoffs.
No matter the ultimate outcome for the team, though, you can bank on Wade’s individual goal not being met this season.
