It’s the time of year that NBA fans swoon over for months on end. In anticipation of the upcoming release of NBA 2K15, information about the game is starting to leak out. One of the biggest discussion points is always the ratings, which have now hit the web. Though it’s nothing hugely important, the ratings are a solid place to start a discussion and also gage the public perception of a player.
One of the most curious rankings in this year’s game is that of the enigmatic Kobe Bryant. Unsurprisingly, the veteran guard is the highest rated player on the Los Angeles Lakers by a wide margin, receiving an 89 overall rating with Carlos Boozer and Nick Young tied for second on the team with an overall rating of 78.
However, what’s curious is the fact that Kobe’s rating of 89 makes him the sixth highest rated player in the game, coming in only behind LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Tim Duncan and Carmelo Anthony.
If we knew that Bryant was going to get back on the floor and produce at the same level that he was at prior to his torn Achilles suffered in April 2013. However, he’s played a minimal number of games at less-than-100-percent effectiveness since that time and is now 36 years old and entering his 19th NBA season. There’s a lot that we don’t know about what Bryant has left in the tank.
It’s totally understandable for a game that appeals to even the most minimal NBA fans to diehard fans to rate one of the most recognizable and iconic players currently in the league higher than he probably should. However, when you apply his rating in NBA 2K15 to what’s going on with Bryant in real life, things don’t really add up.
