Russell Westbrook has established himself as one of the best players in the NBA today. The Oklahoma City Thunder point guard is enigmatic on and off the court, but he’s also immensely talent and can change a game in an instant. It’s no wonder that he’s often in the debate for the best point guard in the game.
In terms of video games, though, he doesn’t get nearly the same treatment. Player ratings for the upcoming NBA 2K15 have been released and Westbrook has been rated an 88. That’s certainly a respectable ranking of Westbrook if it weren’t for how he stacks up to other upper-tier players in the league.
Westbrook is the 16th-highest rated player in NBA 2K15. What’s a bit more surprising is that he’s the third-highest ranked point guard in the video game behind Stephen Curry (10th) and Chris Paul (third). Moreover, guys like Dwight Howard and an aging Dirk Nowitzki rank ahead of him.
In terms of their actual player rating in the game, all of these guys are close to one another. However, when sorted by rating, it’s absolutely preposterous that Westbrook would be 16th in the league. It’s just a video game, but there doesn’t seem to be any logic behind it.
Maybe they are factoring in his recent knee injuries, but that doesn’t exactly make sense considering the fact that Kobe Bryant received the sixth-highest rating in the game. It just doesn’t make sense that the developers can look at all of the things that Westbrook does well, how well he produces, and all of his physical attributes and think that he’s the 16th best player in the league.
When it comes down to it, this is a trivial argument that won’t actually affect Westbrook on the Thunder. He’ll more than likely take the floor this season and continue to excite crowds and make plays to help his team win; the rating in a video game doesn’t change that. However, that doesn’t change the fact that he should be getting more respect from the guys at 2K Sports.
