I don’t know how much of a myth this is or ever was, but Jose Calderon will be a huge upgrade at the point guard position for the New York Knicks in 2014-15, and it seems like it isn’t taking him too long to fit in.
Carmelo Anthony says he and the veteran Calderon already “got it.” ‘Melo feels that his new teammate’s experience and skill set are easy to connect with. I feel like he is right, and it must be a huge difference from playing with Raymond Felton, one of the players they traded to the Dallas Mavericks for Calderon this summer.
Calderón averages 6.8 APG and just 1.7 turnovers per game in his nine-year career, while also shooting 41.1 percent from beyond the arc, higher than the likes of Ray Allen and Reggie Miller in their careers. Felton can’t brag about anything like that.
Not only has Anthony enjoyed Calderon’s presence thus far, but head coach Derek Fisher has liked what he has seen from him as well. A proclaimed weakness of Calderon’s game, by many, is his defense. Fisher does not feel the same way, claiming that Calderon’s intensity and motor at practice will help the Knicks’ defense improve as a unit. In a solid team defense, Calderon would not prove to be a weak link.
Not only does Fisher have confidence in Calderon, but he has confidence in Fisher, going as far to making a comment on how it looks like he had been “coaching for years” already. If Calderón displays this kind of confidence in the system and continues to fit in with his teammates and coaches, it would then hopefully rub off on his teammates. Calderon has a unique bit of talent combined with experience and intelligence, something the Knicks desperately need.
It was never a matter of if, but when José Calderón would start to fit in with the Knicks. The guy has played in both of the league’s conferences, and he has even played in the Knicks’ division, so he should be familiar with how the team’s season will be structured. This is somebody whose leadership and experience can go a long way, helping turn a miserable 2013-14 into a better 2014-15.
