Earth to Dwyane Wade: most people’s jobs aren’t fun.

Wade is an all time great player, we all know this to be true and it’s incontrovertible. However, he didn’t help the prevailing mantra that he is a bit conceited from fans and media alike with recent comments during a Bleacher Report interview, where he explained that the 2013-14 season, and the last four years in general with the Miami Heat‘s big three were not always fun for him.

“It was great, you know, we went to the Finals four years in a row, and it was everything we wanted from that standpoint, but sometimes throughout that run, at certain times, it just wasn’t fun,” Wade said. “Individually, it was great having certain relationships and having my best friend here with me, but all of us didn’t have fun all the time.”

Wade claims to have a renewed sense of excitement for this upcoming season, his first in four years without LeBron James. He recently declared that he intends on playing “all 82 games” in comparison to his last campaign, where he seemingly was working a schedule that resembled one of a college student trying to set their hours around classes.

“Just this year, coming in, I can see, even in the coaches, there’s just a different renewed focus and energy,” Wade said.

The Heat catered to his every need last season. They rested him and he made $18.6 million in the process. Yet, it seems he didn’t appreciate it whatsoever because he didn’t have any fun.

Wade’s coming off as a pretentious Hollywood egomaniac with that statement, and sadly, he probably doesn’t even realize it. How many people in this world get to have a “swell time” or “fun” at work? Not many. Making $18.6 million to play a sport that you love to play while traveling around the country being pampered like a Hilton sister sounds like a good time to me. But what do I know?

Mr. Wade, with all due respect (and I mean all due respect), how come you re-signed to play two more seasons? Was it the irresistible opportunity to have fun again, or the $31 million you will make during this time frame? James’ departure could not be motivating you that much. Even if you were going to have fun, which is highly unlikely but would be amazing, that is not why you’re still playing basketball. It’s strictly finance and ego-driven at this point of your career. Let’s not pretend it’s anything to the contrary.

Good luck in 2014-15 without James and half the attendance you have had in your own building over the last four seasons. I hope you can somehow find a way to muster even just a smidgen of enjoyment along the way.
