After a season of having no go-to scorer, the Boston Celtics could have found another piece to the puzzle in Evan Turner.
Turner showcased his scoring ability last night during the Celtics’ preseason victory against the Philadelphia 76ers, finishing the game with 15 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. Turner made an excellent impression during his first game in a Boston uniform, leading the team in scoring while taking over some of the point guard responsibilities with Rajon Rondo still out with a broken hand.
If the Celtics are to continue to run a traditional offense, Turner could be the lead scorer Boston has been waiting for. Jeff Green has been looking for someone to take over the lead-scoring duties from the moment he arrived, so no one will be happier about Turner scoring than him. Green is fine being the Robin to Turner’s Batman, and the pair could be an impressive scoring duo.
No one is expecting Turner to walk into the TD Garden and start putting up Kobe Bryant-like numbers, but having a guard that is capable of creating his own shot is a nice change of pace from last season. Also, Turner’s ability to find teammates while creating space for himself makes him more valuable than ever.
Head coach Brad Stevens has said he wants to mold the offense around the San Antonio Spurs, using a system based on reading and reacting. A player like Turner fits in to that type of system perfectly. He creates his own shot, moves well without the ball and has the ability to hit open shots when left open. If the Celtics follow the same system as the Spurs, Turner could be the guard that Boston truly needs.
