Indiana Pacers Wrong To Extend Frank Vogel

You would think that the Indiana Pacers, after losing one of the NBA‘s best all-around players to a horrific leg injury, would be full of doubt and uncertainty when it comes to the organization’s future. That’s why the extension that head coach Frank Vogel just got makes zero sense.

The fact is the Pacers reached the Eastern Conference finals last year by default, yet the team fell apart late in the season, almost choking away the first round of the playoffs to the lackluster Atlanta Hawks. That sort of self-destruction falls squarely on the shoulders of Vogel.

President of basketball operations Larry Bird must be thinking that some other player will just magically be able to replace George, kind of like how George more than replaced Danny Granger years ago. Problem is, that guy’s name is Lance Stephenson, and the wind blew him to Charlotte.

There’s no way the Pacers could have predicted that George would get hurt playing for his country, but Bird and company failed miserably at preparing for such a catastrophe. Coaches can only be pulled out of such air crashes by players and, without Stephenson, Vogel is in trouble.

Instead, Vogel, with his brand-new extension, is being asked to be a magician. And even if Bird is aware of the fact that the Pacers are going to stink up the joint this season, the worst NBA record never guarantees you Tim Duncan or LeBron James. Why not just let Vogel talk to other teams and bring in a new guy for the rebuilding process that is bound to ensue?
