As the New York Knicks kicked off preseason play this week, it was longtime sixth-man J.R. Smith that got the starting nod on the wing for the Knickerbockers. Granted, that decision was influenced by injuries to Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr., but it’s certainly something worth noting for this Knicks team, particularly with what head coach Derek Fisher had to say about Smith.
It’s a proven mistake to read too much into everything that happens in the context of the NBA preseason. Rather than a litmus test for how the entirety of a team’s regular season is going to play out, the preseason is a time to work out kinks and try new things. Smith starting, however, seems like it could be something of importance and something that could last.
After the game, Fisher praised Smith’s willingness to learn, how quickly he’s been picking up the triangle offense, and his work ethic. That’s correct; J.R. Smith and work ethic were used in the same sentence and the context was undeniably positive. If you need a minute to recalibrate your brain, I’d understand.
There’s no denying the talent of Smith as a player. When the Knicks were winning 50+ games just two seasons ago, he was an enormous factor in that success as a sixth man. His ability to spark New York’s offense and his knack for knocking down the outside shot is a huge asset for any team.
However, the issue with Smith has always been a troubling amount of complacency in his demeanor. To say he’s a free spirit would be the kindest way to put it, but his antics, behavior, and even style-of-play at times have all been problems at time that have limited a Knicks team that isn’t at a place where they can afford such limitations.
Looking towards this season where hopes are obviously high for the Knicks given the arrivals of Fisher and Phil Jackson, hearing positive things about Smith’s commitment and acclimation to the new offensive system are certainly a cause for some optimism. Make no mistake, it should be cautious optimism given Smith’s history. However, if he’s willing to put in the work, pick up the triangle, and be somewhat of a leader for this Knicks team, he could sincerely be a difference maker in helping New York be a dangerous team in the Eastern Conference this season.
