As nearly all of the dominoes have fallen into place in NBA Free Agency this summer, the biggest domino yet to fall is undoubtedly veteran guard Ray Allen. After spending the past two seasons with the Miami Heat, Allen has been slow-playing the league in terms of deciding where he wants to spend the 2014-15 season.
The way things appear to be unfolding right now, though, Allen may not sign with a team until the middle of the season. In fact, there are rumblings throughout the league that the 39-year-old guard may not make his decision of where to sign until a good bit into the season, with the All-Star break being a time that has been mentioned.
In a recent radio interview, Boston Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge stated that he thinks that Allen will wait until the break in mid-February to sign with a team. Ainge says that he believes the veteran guard will want to see how things shake out throughout the league, which teams could most use his services, and—of course—which teams are on top of the standings.
Ainge is certainly a guy who would have some insider information regarding Allen, given the history of Allen with the Celtics organization and the simple fact that Ainge is in the business of trying to sign free agents and he would know if a player is planning on waiting to sign. Given that in the context of other rumors throughout the league and this seems like it could very well be how the situation regarding Allen plays out.
In terms of how that affects Allen, though, the answer is simply that it shouldn’t have much of an impact on his performance. Allen is notorious for his personal workout regimen and staying in phenomenal shape, one of the many reasons he’s been able to be successful this late in his career.
It’s hard to say who the favorites to land Allen currently are, though the Cleveland Cavaliers certainly still look promising, simply because we have no idea how the season is going to play out and what situation will be the best fit for Allen. What we do know, though, is that you shouldn’t be looking for Allen on an NBA roster for quite some time. Even with that, though, it’d still be unwise to forget about him because he’s going to have an impact whenever and wherever he does eventually sign.
