Why are so many injuries happening in the NBA before we even get to the regular season?
First, Bradley Beal breaks a bone in his non-shooting hand, and then Kevin Durant fractures a bone in his small toe. Both players are expected to miss about two months, and the league just got a little bit less interesting over the weekend.
The only good news for the Oklahoma City Thunder is that they caught it when they did.
“Because it’s a stress injury, it happened over time,” general manager Sam Presti said Sunday. “The fact that Kevin mentioned it when he did is a real fortunate piece of this because if he had continued to play on it, it would continue to get worse. So that it was identified when it was identified, and that the pain, or achenes, was enough to mention it, is a positive.”
Durant is likely out of the MVP race after this, but he could come back and still lead the league in scoring average. What Thunder fans should be truly concerned about is their playoff hopes with Russell Westbrook running the show, and they should be near the Western Conference’s cellar for the first month. Obviously they will start to win more games once they get the MVP back, but Oklahoma City will have dug itself too deep of a hole by then.
Foot injuries have derailed so many promising careers, and it would be quite foolish for Durant to try and rush back. This prediction does not make me happy, but the Thunder are going to miss the playoffs in a loaded Western Conference as a result of this devastating injury.
