The new injury, amongst the many injuries, that Steve Nash just incurred sheds light on the point guard situation for the Los Angeles Lakers. They are in need of someone to fill Nash’s shoes, and they need it desperately.
While last year Kendall Marshall provided Los Angeles with some decent point play, averaging 8.8 assists per game, Marshall lacks the ability to create for himself, which to my mind is a detriment in today’s game. Marshall does not play on a team that can manufacture points the way that the Los Angeles Clippers can. While the Lakers were 11th in the league in points scored per game, they had to rely on a host of characters such as Kent Bazemore, Xavier Henry and Jodie Meeks. Now the Lakers have lost Meeks and Pau Gasol, a pillar in their offense and defense for a long time.
With Kobe Bryant coming back into the lineup to hopefully play longer than six games, Jeremy Lin can really help them. Lin is still only a few years removed the player who dropped 38 on the Lakers while playing for the New York Knicks. If the Lakers can build an offense that runs, rather than having Kobe be the center-point of the offense as has been the case since Rik Smits was playing, then they might be successful in creating points for themselves. Lin was still not a bad scorer last year, even when he was a fourth or fifth option on a team that had James Harden, Dwight Howard and Chandler Parsons.
Other than scoring, Lin can create for others as well. He has pretty good athleticism that allows him to get around defenders, but sometimes he can get out of control. This is where Bryant can step in and help the young player with that. Bryant can take his mindfulness for the game that he has acquired under Phil Jackson and teach Lin to learn how to think through the game instead of feeling his way through the game.
