While some people clamor for the Miami Heat to carry three point guards on their roster, others would prefer the organization to make a move towards improving other parts of their team. The truth is, the Heat should strongly consider trading Norris Cole.
With a statement like that comes a question that the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Ira Winderman posed: “What kind of value is Cole perceived as having?” The short answer is that nobody knows, but the Heat are doing their due diligence to dig up whatever interests may be out there by continually trotting him out as a starter during the preseason.
Odds are that the organization did not pay Mario Chalmers $8.3 million to come off of the bench once the regular season kicks off. That’s particularly true when he has been the starting point guard on two championship teams and for 3-of-4 consecutive NBA Finals runs.
The reality is that no matter how much it seems like Chalmers was being squeezed out, his trade value isn’t high enough to net much after his 2014 playoff collapse. And that’s not even counting his six-year tendency for making plays that would land others a D-League assignment.
The surprising cosigns and growth of rookie Shabazz Napier is also helping the cause for the team to drop one lead guard. The fact that Cole’s new agent, Rich Paul, has been the cause of bitter feelings for the organization — after this summer’s LeBron James fiasco — is also hurting his cause to stay around.
Still, in the end, Miami’s decision should come down to showcasing Cole so that they can bring in the much-needed wing help that the roster is missing. An extra player who can score off of the dribble is way more important than carrying a three point guard rotation.
