Today, the Brooklyn Nets waived big man Willie Reed, trimming their roster to 16 players. The Nets have had their eyes on Reed for a while. The Saint Louis University product is very talented offensively, and I think in time he’ll find a permanent home.
This leaves the door open for Jerome Jordan, who has impressed this preseason. The Nets currently have three players on non-guaranteed contracts as of right now: Jordan, Jorge Gutierrez and Cory Jefferson. In my opinion, the Nets need to cut Gutierrez because I don’t see a need for four point guards to be on the roster with Deron Williams, Jarrett Jack and Marquis Teague.
Jordan has impressed a lot this preseason, and I think his play has earned him a spot on the Nets’ roster. With the injury history of Brook Lopez, it’s not a bad idea to keep another 7-footer on the team.
This isn’t documented enough, but the loss of Andray Blatche was maybe the Nets’ biggest loss this offseason. When Blatche came to Brooklyn, he grew up as an NBA player. Who knows why the Nets or any team didn’t sign him this offseason, but I believe Jordan could fill some of the void left by Blatche even though he is no where near as talented.
I also believe the Nets should hold on to the rookie Jefferson out of Baylor. He has great upside and can rebound. He’ll develop more over the next couple of seasons but with the release of Reed, the Nets have some options.
