The Miami Heat roster currently stands at 19 players signed to either guaranteed or non-guaranteed contracts. Unfortunately for four of these players, they will not make the final 15-man roster heading into the regular season. With so many unknowns surrounding the Heat right now, it’s anyone’s guess as to which players will be cut.
You can already rule out a few players who won’t be cut: Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Luol Deng, Danny Granger, Mario Chalmers, Udonis Haslem, Josh McRoberts, Norris Cole, Chris Andersen, Shawne Williams and James Ennis. The remaining players on the roster who have the potential to be released include: Justin Hamilton, Khem Birch, Tyler Johnson, Andre Dawkins, Larry Drew II, Shawn Jones, Shannon Brown and Shabazz Napier. About half of those players will be released will be before Oct. 29, the Heat’s first game of the season.
Taking into account how desperate the Heat are for some size underneath the rim, I would imagine they end up keeping either Hamilton or Birch. The guard position is also moderately weak in terms of depth, so a veteran player like Brown also has a good chance of sticking around. Although Erik Spoelstra hasn’t spoken a single word about who shall be released, the rotation he has stuck with throughout the preseason is pretty indicative of who will be let go.
Here is my prediction of the four players most likely to be released by the Heat by Oct. 29: Shawn Jones, Larry Drew II, Tyler Johnson and Khem Birch.
