Although the news of Steve Nash being ruled out for the 2014-15 NBA season is not the least bit shocking, it still doesn’t make it any less sad. A once great player has reached a point where his body is simply tapping out. His mind is willing and his desire to play is clearly strong, but you have to think that a retirement announcement is right around the corner for the future hall-of-famer.
At this time it’s just being reported that Nash will not play this season for the Los Angeles Lakers. There’s been no official talk of a pending retirement. But is it realistic to think that a year on the shelf will heal Nash enough to get him back on the court for a victory lap in 2015-16? Not really. Retirement is the most realistic scenario.
Let’s hope that the iconic point guard makes the right decision for himself, first and foremost. If he wants to give it one more go next season, as crazy as that sounds to most people, let him try if it will help him cope with the situation. It would definitely make for a much more appropriate ending to his career.
Steve Nash deserves better than a career-ending injury. But right now it looks like that’s the hand he’s been dealt.
