The San Antonio Spurs signed a few new pieces in the offseason, and they have already let a few of them go. The Spurs cut G Bryce Cotton and F Joshua Davis today, which cuts the roster down to 16 players. That means the Spurs will cut at least one more before the season starts to reach the 15-man limit.

Cotton and Davis both joined the Spurs on their trip through Europe and were given substantial playing time, but clearly weren’t what the Spurs were looking for. It’s hard to know what San Antonio was looking for after it kept the same roster that won an NBA Championship a few months ago. Someone would have to be pretty darn good to disrupt that roster.

There are only a few realistic options left to consider for the organization to release. The most obvious would be F JaMychal Green as he was signed in a similar situation to Cotton and Davis. Green hasn’t made any real noise in the NBA outside of the preseason. Green has done well in the D-League, but is still trying to break through to the NBA. Unless he possesses some talent or skill set the Spurs value over players like Jeff Ayers and Matt Bonner, expect Green to be cut shortly.

Other options to consider cutting are Ayers, Bonner, Austin Daye and Cory Joseph. Though all of these players have the potential to be cut, Joseph seems to be coming along nicely and will surely be needed with Patty Mills out with injury to start the season. Ayers and Bonner don’t play much, but Green can’t match Bonner’s three-point ability, and Ayers has much more experience. Daye didn’t play much last season, but showed flashes of talent that the Spurs might like to have available.

While Green has potential, the Spurs are in a good situation that they probably don’t want to change. Expect Green to be gone soon.
