Superstar LeBron James has shown his savvy yet again by deciding to let his fans choose whether he will perform the pregame powder toss ritual this season.
“I may,” James said on Friday about whether he would return to the tradition. “I’m going to let the fans decide and see what they think. If they want me to, I will do it.”
This is such a smart move, because now nobody in the press can burn him for doing it. It is a borderline genius decision, and this maneuver completely takes the potential criticism for showboating off of his broad shoulders.
Of course, the fans are going to want the toss. It is fun and theatrical, which means that James is going to get what he wants and be able to claim he had nothing to do with it. This was the same way he handled choosing his new jersey number, and you will notice that there was no media or public backlash after that decision. He is clearly a much savvier player and man than he was during his last stint in Ohio.
It will be interesting to see how many more things like this he leaves up to the general public in the future. The four-time MVP will be throwing up some chalk on opening night though, and there is no doubt at all about that. People forget what an amazing spectacle it was going to a Cleveland Cavaliers game just five years ago, but they will soon remember once James tosses up that sweet, white powder.
