Michael Jordan Says Ring As Owner Would Be Better Than Six He Won As Player
Michael Jordan‘s career in the NBA has now spanned 30 years. The first part of his career went about as well as it could have. The second part, not so much. Jordan’s transition from best basketball in the world to executive has not exactly gone smoothly. In fact, it’s been downright ugly at times.
But it appears there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel for the Charlotte Hornets and their famous owner after many years in the NBA’s proverbial cellar.
With the re-branding of the team this season and a roster stocked full of talent, hopes are fairly high for the Hornets. They’re a team coming off a playoff berth last season, that’s also taken some big steps forward in attracting big name free agents. Namely, the acquisition of Lance Stephenson this past summer.
His Airness sounded off on Stephenson, as well as the topic of a seventh ring during a recent interview with ESPN:
“I’m always dreaming about that seventh ring. Always. And, to get to that, would be much more gratifying than the six. The other six that I’ve actually won.”
Some may find Jordan’s answer surprising. But it’s not really all that surprising when you consider his competitive drive. We’re talking about a guy who’s received the ultimate competitive check as an exec for the Wizards/Bobcats/Hornets. He went from a place where he could control almost anything he wanted on the court, to a place where he had far, far less control from the owner’s box.
You could see the emotion coming through the screen in that interview. These last few years in Charlotte have clearly been tough on MJ. But as he did during his playing career, it looks like he’s using his failures to motivate him toward future success.
If he can get Charlotte to the mountain top someday, what a story it would be.
