The Houston Rockets gambled this offseason in their quest to add a third superstar to join James Harden and Dwight Howard. Doing so would’ve surely made them one of the favorites in the NBA for the 2014-15 season, but they ended up coming up worse for their wear, losing Chandler Parsons in restricted free agency while also missing out on signing a big-name free agent like Chris Bosh.
Even with their unfortunate luck from this offseason, though, the Rockets still have high expectations for this season and rightfully so. Howard and Harden are an extremely potent tandem while they have a bevy of young players that could really make some noise this season alongside their star duo.
However, as the Rockets look to try and poise themselves for a run deep into the postseason, they might be looking to make some moves (as general manager Daryl Morey always seems to be doing) during the season. It seems likely that they’d look to ship out one of their elder statesmen on the roster to maintain their youth and a guy like Francisco Garcia seems like a prime candidate.
Garcia played in only 55 games last season for the Rockets and wasn’t incredibly effective. He didn’t produce enough to really speak of, though he did maintain solid outside-shooting like he has for most of his career, knocking down 35.8 percent of his 3.5 attempts per game.
Garcia isn’t going to draw a big haul if the Rockets were to trade him this season, but he’s a guy that could have value elsewhere that just isn’t there in Houston. As of right now, he’s stuck on the wing playing behind guys like James Harden and Trevor Ariza, not leaving much room in the rotation for the veteran winger. However, a team needing a veteran presence and a perimeter scorer could look to see if Garcia could provide that for their team.
Especially considering what the Rockets gave up this offseason, it’s hard to say that they should trade anyone considering that they have already lost so much of their depth. However, Garcia seems like a natural candidate to be traded considering his role in Houston and the fact that he should still hold some value around the league.
