After signing a 10-day contract with the New Jersey Nets in the 2011-12 NBA season and performing exceptionally well as he eventually was signed for the rest of the year, Gerald Green inked a deal with the Indiana Pacers for the next year. He disappointed in his one season there, and was then shipped to the Phoenix Suns for last season.
The fast-paced, high-volume offense style of the Suns played right into Green’s wheelhouse and he was a hugely contributing role player for them as they found surprising success. He averaged a career-high 15.8 points per game while shooting 44.5 percent from the floor and 40 percent on his 6.2 three-point attempts per game.
However, now that the Suns have Eric Bledsoe healthy, signed Isaiah Thomas, and have youngsters like T.J. Warren and Archie Goodwin looking to make a name for themselves, Green’s role is going to be diminished to start the season and could continually decline as the year rolls on.
While his value is still high coming off of last season, though, the Suns should be looking to sell-high and trade Green early in this season to help them become even more poised for a postseason run.
There’s no telling what the market for Green would be right now, but there are bound to be teams interested in a player capable of what he can do on the offensive end of the floor. Considering the state of the Suns and their weaknesses, if a team were willing to send back either picks or another rotation-worthy big man, that would be ideal for Phoenix.
If Green were to stay in Phoenix this season, he would likely continue to have success in their system. The issue, though, is that it wouldn’t be maximizing his value considering the role he would be playing and what the Suns could possibly get for him in a trade. By that logic, it’d be unwise for Phoenix not to try and unload him and do so well before the deadline?
