Amongst the competitive types, it is believed that there is nothing winning can’t solve. For the Miami Heat, nothing could be truer after the NBA’s top player walked away from South Beach despite all of the success. LeBron James packed his bags and took his talents back to the cold streets of Cleveland, and like most great businesses and franchises do, the Heat simply moved forward.
With downgraded expectations and about as much media attention as the 2008 season, no one in the industry has really discussed Miami as a contender in the East. Yet, Chris Bosh is already fighting back against the black cloud that this past offseason placed over sunny southern Florida.
Unlike the Cavaliers, who botched James’ homecoming party, Bosh and the Heat began the season rolling. They begin with a home opener win over a Washington Wizards club that many have high hopes for. Bosh had 26 PTS and 15 REB as Miami won comfortably, 107-95.
The big man and defending Eastern Conference champs followed the victory up with an impressive win over the Philadelphia 76ers, 114-96. Bosh posted his first 30-point game of the season with 30 PTS and added eight REB, four AST and two STL.
Obviously, I have to answer the many who will combat this view with the argument of “still 80 games to go,” but Heat players and fans should feel a sense of pride and confidence based on the early performances. It could be easy for the team to wallow in a feeling of doubt and disbelief over James. However, players like Bosh, Dwyane Wade, Mario Chalmers and Udonis Haslem are veteran winners. Not only do these gentlemen have multiple rings, but they have seen the bottom of the barrel as well.
The combination of proven winners who have seen the ultimate highs and lows of the game make for a dangerous team. Add the “chip on the shoulder,” along with the disdain that James left, and you have a recipe for a franchise capable of anything. Yes, it is still very early in the basketball season, but Miami will accomplish more than most people think.
