The Milwaukee Bucks have new leadership higher up in ownership and in place on the sidelines as they picked up Jason Kidd to be their head coach in the offseason. They landed a coveted prospect in Jabari Parker in the 2014 NBA Draft, and the future is looking bright for the first time in a long time in Milwaukee. But a bright future does not mean good results right away, as the 2014-2015 season will be another long one, with plenty of losses and youngsters playing plenty of minutes. The roster could see a lot of overhaul in the process. One player the Bucks should strongly consider trading is Jared Dudley.
The Bucks acquired Dudley in a trade this offseason from the Los Angeles Clippers, essentially taking his contract so the Clippers could make other moves this offseason. Dudley put up lackluster stats last season for the Clippers, not providing the outside shooting they hoped they would receive from him.
For the Bucks, Dudley is one of the few veterans on the roster, as the oldest player on the Bucks currently is the 30 year old Zaza Pachulia. He is a good defender and three-point shooter, the type of player that could help a contending team off the bench.
That is where the problem lays, as the Bucks are not a contending team. They are actually far from it and the gritty skill set that Dudley provides doesn’t help them much. Honestly, Dudley is kind of in the way for the Bucks, as he is blocking younger players from getting playing time.
The Bucks have young players like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Brandon Knight, Khris Middleton and Nate Wolters that need playing time. Dudley right now is taking up starter minutes at shooting guard with another veteran behind him in O.J. Mayo that needs playing time as well. At this point in their careers, and for the roles that would be available, Mayo is the better fit and should be kept.
There is a logjam at a position where the Bucks should be opening up playing time so younger players get some time. With not much to play for, developing young talent and seeing which pieces are worth keeping for the future is what the Bucks should be focusing on. For that to happen, the Bucks should strongly consider moving Dudley to a contending team looking for a perimeter defender and someone that can knock down a timely shot. In the process, the Bucks should be able to stockpile more assets for the future.
