Superstar Kevin Durant is currently sidelined with a foot injury which could ultimately derail the Oklahoma City Thunder‘s playoff hopes, but there are still other reasons last year’s MVP has been newsworthy. For instance, rumors have been flying around about him making a return home by joining the Washington Wizards in 2016.
“I really haven’t thought about that, to be honest. I hear it a lot,” Durant said on ESPN’s Mike and Mike. “But I think I can make an impact on the community I grew up in from anywhere. So I think I’m doing a good job of that in Oklahoma. My friends, my family, the kids in my neighborhood are seeing that. I’m inspiring them from Oklahoma City.”
He inspires children all over the world, but it would not catch anyone off guard to see him join D.C. His words strike me as a little bit disingenuous due to his competitive nature. If OKC does not win the title during his current contract, then it is more than a legitimate possibility that Durant leaves town and pursues championships elsewhere.
A lot can happen in two years.
Grantland’s Zach Lowe even floated the possibility for “The Slim Reaper” to sign a one-year contract — which would be truly crazy after his latest injury. The reigning MVP obviously can make loads of cash off the court, but he should always take guaranteed money over any alternatives. My bet is still on the Wizards to land Durant in 2016, however, he could shock us all with an even crazier decision.
