When a team has two guys on the perimeter who can knock down 3-point shots and shoot from the field at an efficient rate, that team is generally pretty good. Such is the case for the Golden State Warriors.
The Warriors did not hold back on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Clippers, winning against a team that is hoping to be a contender down the stretch. Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were no joke in the game, combining for 47 points on 16-of-31 shooting from the field, including 7-of-12 from beyond the arc.
There is no other backcourt in the NBA that can do what these two can. Both players excel at creating their own shot off the dribble, and both can hit set shots and off-balance shots with ease. It is hard enough for a lot of players in the league to hit shots from deep when they have 4-5 seconds to set their feet and get the shot up. Both Curry and Thompson only need one to two seconds to get a shot up that has a better chance than not of going in.
In transition, in the half court — it simply does not matter. The “Splash Brothers” are going to hit the shots when they count, whether they are from inside the arc or in the parking lot.
Along with their fantastic shooting, both players have the ability to create for others and play team basketball on the offensive end. Curry and Thompson make spectacular plays setting up their teammates multiple times a game, and really buy into the offensive system of head coach Steve Kerr that involves ball movement, ball movement and more ball movement.
Defensively, both guards can hold their own at their respective positions, with Thompson being able to guard anywhere from the one to the three with lockdown capability. Thompson is slowly becoming one of the best perimeter defenders in the league, and that kind of two-way skill makes him arguably the best shooting guard in the NBA.
Against the Clippers, Curry and Thompson hit shots and made plays that just leave anyone watching in awe. Both players have bright futures in the league, and the Warriors will be championship contenders as long as they are in the Bay Area hitting threes and shooting the breeze.
