PG Kyrie Irving‘s relationship with LeBron James always looked like the biggest stumbling block pertaining to how quickly the Cleveland Cavaliers would contend for championships. Obviously, their chemistry is still a work in progress. James has appeared frustrated so far this season, because he often throws no-look passes to teammates that are in the wrong spots. They are also not dishing the rock with quickness and efficiency like the Miami Heat did last year, however, it is not time to pull the panic cord quite yet.
For one thing, Irving’s head coach has been supportive of his young point guard.
“I thought he was a lot more aggressive on offense tonight,” David Blatt said after Wednesday’s game, according to ESPN.com. “I thought that he made it a point to come out tonight with a kind of a fire and a sense of urgency that perhaps we didn’t see last night, and I thought he did a great job. I thought he played defense for good parts of the game very well, and he played a lot of minutes. He laid it out there tonight, so I’m pretty happy with him.”
Happiness will not buy Blatt any wins, though, and it should be interesting to see how soon rumors of shaky job security start up. When the Heat were 9-8, don’t you remember it looked like Pat Riley was only a few more losses away from stepping into his coaching shoes? This is looking more and more like that kind of a scenario, and it will be fun hearing which names start to pop out. For instance, John Calipari and James are fairly close. If there was any job that might lure coach Cal away from Lexington, it would certainly be a chance to work with the world’s best player. But we are not at that point now.
Another reason the four-time MVP should be patient with this team is because he still does not know the full roster. Ray Allen is taking a lengthy vacation this season with a remote possibility of retirement, but he should soon follow James to Cleveland and go fishing for another ring.
