In what was expected to be an early competitive matchup has turned into a contest between two teams with two combined wins in eight games. The Denver Nuggets (1-3) will host the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers (1-3) on Friday. In order to get an edge in the contest, Denver’s marketing department decided to have some fun on social media.
The Nuggets decided the best way to get in head of the Cavaliers players was by publicly trolling LeBron James. They did this by promoting Denver’s highly anticipated matchup against Cleveland without ever mentioning James, as opposing teams typically do when playing the king.
For instance:
I cannot imagine the clever public relations move is doing much more than getting some laughs, which it definitely has accomplished. Even if James was not James (one of the greatest players in league history), he is still performing as the best statistical player on the Cavaliers through four games this season. That should be reason enough for an opposing team to highlight him as the premier player.
Regardless of how well James is performing on the court, it does not seem to be enough. In fact, he has been over-analyzed to the point where the general consensus is he is too laid back this season. The teams James has historically played for only succeed on a high level when he takes games over. Until he decides to do that, Cleveland will continue to just glide along.
As funny as the Nuggets were on Twitter, it may be the worst thing they could have done. Do not be surprised if James steps his game up to a higher level Friday night in order to break the Cavaliers out of their slump.
