Mark Cuban Smart to Admit Blunder in Letting Steve Nash Leave

Mark Cuban

Owner Mark Cuban of the Dallas Mavericks has long been thought foolish for not re-signing Steve Nash, but at that time, the point guard had already endured numerous back issues during his career, so it did not seem like that crazy of a move. Of course, we all know what happened next: Nash won back-to-back MVP awards and redefined how offenses are run in the NBA.

Cuban has vehemently defended many of his decisions, but the eccentric billionaire was right to humble himself and admit that letting his PG go was a huge mistake.

“Letting Steve Nash go. I learned an expensive lesson,” the owner said to Rolling Stones. “It took me too many years to realize that for some GMs, their No. 1 job wasn’t winning a championship, it’s keeping their job. It’s easy to look back and see my mistakes today. I wish I would have been smart enough to know better back then. I loved taking risks to win. Unfortunately, some of them were not as educated as they should have been.”

Cuban has grown a lot since making that misstep, which is why it came as no surprise that Jason Kidd, a Nash-like counterpart, helped Dirk Nowitzki finally get his first championship. The owner deserves praise for admitting his faults, and his interview with Rolling Stones is interesting and touches on everything from Donald Sterling to “Shark Tank” to any downsides of being a billionaire.

Now that Nash’s career is nearing a close, it is sad to think he and Nowitzki could have won a ring together, but at least the point guard can take solace in his old friend owning up to an error.
