Dwyane Wade Takes Over As Offensive Facilitator Of Miami Heat
The Miami Heat were able to keep the Minnesota Timberwolves at bay on Saturday by finishing off the young squad 102-92. There were many solid contributors, but none more important than Dwyane Wade. He steadied the offense by scoring 25 points, but more important were the eight assists he added. Wade has always been an elite passer, but his increased assist total has come at the perfect time for the Heat, as they have struggled moving the ball offensively.
Wade taking over as the primary facilitator is exactly what this Heat team needed, there is no doubt about it. Through all four Heat victories this season, Wade has averaged an astonishing seven assists per game. Wade also leads the Heat in assists currently with 6.3 per game on the season. Compared to last season, when Wade averaged a career low 4.5 assists per game, having more responsibility on the offensive side of the ball this season is doing wonders for Wade’s overall game.
This team will win more games the more they share the ball. This is a fact. Without LeBron James running the offense, this team will have to learn how to become more balanced on that side of the ball, but Wade is making a case that this team can thrive with multiple players stepping up not only to score, but by also sharing the rock.
The next best distributor on the Heat roster is Mario Chalmers with 3.5 assists per game. This is a huge drop from Wade’s numbers, which could be telling of two things. Either the rest of the team will eventually get on board with sharing the ball more, and Wade’s average assists per game will drop, or Wade will continue to dominate this statistic and remain the primary ball-handler when on the court. Both could potentially lead to sustained success for the Heat this season.
