The San Antonio Spurs defeated the Golden State Warriors in impressive fashion, with Tony Parker reminding everyone once again why he is perhaps the best point guard in the league with 28 points in his team’s 113-120 victory.
After getting off to a somewhat surprising 2-3 start, the Spurs have rattled off two back-to-back victories against two of the best teams in the Western Conference in the Warriors and Los Angeles Clippers. The Spurs, who have been without Tiago Splitter and Marco Belinelli for much of the year so far, demonstrated their depth in their win over the Warriors.
The Spurs’ bench scored 40 points, led by Manu Ginobili’s 17 and Cory Joseph’s 11. We have come to expect a game like this from Ginobili every once in a while given he is 37 years old, but Joseph showed off a much-improved jump shot that he confidently pulled right in the face of Stephen Curry throughout the game.
The Warriors began the season on a hot streak thanks mainly to their small-ball lineups being used to perfection by new head coach Steve Kerr, but they ran into a brick wall in San Antonio, which frequently looked to go inside to Tim Duncan. The big man carefully dissected the Warriors’ interior defense through his post scoring and pinpoint passing to outside shooters off of double-teams.
With this victory, the Spurs have shown everyone that they are officially back and have awoken from their slumber. It will be interesting to see how they continue to utilize their lineups as the season progresses in an effort to make sure they are fully healthy by the time the playoffs come around.
