Earlier this morning Los Angeles Clippers superstar Blake Griffin was charged with misdemeanor battery following an incident in a Las Vegas night club last month. When reports surfaced, the claims were that Griffin allegedly slapped a man who was snapping pictures of him. TMZ reported that the surveillance footage shows no slap but there is physical aggressiveness on Griffin’s end.
This is the first incident for Griffin of this nature. Rumors had swirled around before about a Starbucks encounter involving a rude Justin Bieber, but Griffin debunked that rumor in an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine.
Upon hearing about the encounter in Las Vegas, one would assume that it was false like the Starbucks incident turned out to be. No one paid attention to that situation, but now all eyes are on Griffin, the Clippers and the league.
This incident will probably result in a suspension or fine from the league since the NBA has been known to give punishments in non-basketball related incidents as well. If the league chooses to suspend Griffin for any number of games, it will affect the Clippers greatly.
The Clippers haven’t gotten off to the best start so far this season. They are an above .500 team, but they’ve received much criticism for their recent play. Even with the Clippers not performing to their assumed and desired potential, Griffin has been outstanding in most of their games so far this season. If Griffin is taken off the court for any amount of time, the Clippers will forge on without him but it will prove to be extremely difficult. Not only is Griffin a star player on the team, he is getting comfortable having a leadership role on the team.
The Clippers need every player to play to the best of their ability, but they especially need Griffin because he is one of the best players on the team. Taking Griffin away will almost assure more losses for the Clippers this season. Although this incident is unfortunate it will be a good test for the Clippers, if Griffin is suspended, to try to persevere without him and see what can and cannot work when the star athlete isn’t on the court.
