Ellen DeGeneres’ Shout-Out to Michael Carter-Williams Nothing But a Funny Diversion in Long Season for Philadelphia 76ers
In a published essay written for Derek Jeter’s new publishing venture, The Players’ Tribute, Michael Carter-Williams said one of the ways he copes with losing is to watch the Ellen DeGeneres Show every day. The Philadelphia 76ers’ 2013-14 Rookie of the Year says the hour of entertainment takes his mind off losing. He said sitting at home with his stepfather and watching the show late in the afternoon has become a routine.
DeGeneres gave MCW a nearly five-minute “right-back-at-you” kind of tribute on her Wednesday show and it only helped for awhile because the Sixers fell to 0-11 with a 101-90 loss to the visiting Boston Celtics a few hours later. The Sixers led throughout most of the first half and went off tied 46-46 at the half before the wheels, which were never on all that tight to begin with, fell off.
DeGeneres’ almost word-for-word recital of Gene Hackman’s pep talk in the movie Hoosiers was nothing more than a funny diversion in what will be a long season. Heck, who would have known MCW had such a bad taste in comedians in the first place?
Admittedly, DeGeneres prefaced her pep talk by saying she didn’t know much about basketball and called the Celtics the “Ben Afflecks,” but now she and Carter-Williams will be as forever linked as two diverse people can be. DeGenenes’ team will now become the Sixers and her favorite player will be MCW and now MCW can take that one positive away from Wednesday and that is no joke.
