New York Knicks Must Improve Supporting Cast
The New York Knicks suffered yet another loss at the hands of the Minnesota Timberwolves, this time in the form of a blowout. The Knicks three leading scorers, Carmelo Anthony, Amar’e Stoudemire and Jason Smith combined for 53 of the team’s 99 points, but sadly their supporting cast did not provide enough help.
Anthony, who resigned with the Knicks during the offseason, has to be disappointed with the team’s 3-10 start to the season. Stoudemire is clearly not the player he used to be, instead being asked to come off the bench as a role player in the later stages of his career. The Knicks are still trying to figure out who should be their starting point guard and center, as both Shane Larkin and Samuel Dalembert have been up and down thus far.
It was obvious when Anthony decided to re-up with the Knicks that he was confident the team could return to being a legitimate threat in the Eastern Conference. Right now they are anything but this, with an offense that still relies too much on isolation set pieces and Anthony’s ability to make something out of nothing.
If the Knicks want to become a playoff-caliber team, they must consider making a trade very soon to give Anthony a reliable wingman to take some of the pressure off of him. At this point, if Anthony has an even slightly off night, the Knicks are basically doomed. The supporting cast clearly needs to be improved, and you can bet that team president Phil Jackson is not going to put up with this kind of performance from his squad for too much longer.
