The Los Angeles Clippers didn’t spend much of their offseason trading, picking up and waiving players. The Clippers were preoccupied trying to waive their former owner and it may have cost them. They added only a few new veteran players during the offseason, and all but one of them, Spencer Hawes, have failed to show their worth. The most concerning pickup has been shooting guard Chris Douglas-Roberts, and he should be a strong consideration for a trade.
Douglas-Roberts has averaged just two points per game and 1.8 rebounds. The averages he’s recorded in the 11 minutes he has played with the Clippers are not only below his career averages, his points per game is below his worst in his career which came in the 2012-13 season. Douglas-Roberts definitely is a role player, but his role has yet to be established with the Clippers.
The issue with putting Douglas-Roberts on the trade block is the fact that he isn’t good enough to just be the only player traded. The Clippers would have to put together a trade package that includes multiple players, but if they can get rid of some of the dead weight on their team with one fell swoop, then it could all be worth it. The Clippers might have to throw Glen Davis, Ekpe Udoh or Jared Cunningham in the mix. They have all struggled so far, but they have all seen very little playing time this season. The majority of the bench has yet to find their identity, and Douglas-Roberts has had more time than others to make a name for himself on the Clippers squad.
The Clippers should consider packaging Douglas-Roberts with Udoh for Corey Brewer of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Brewer’s name has shown up in plenty of trade rumors lately, and his nearly 10 points per game average so far this season would be extremely beneficial for the Clippers. The Clippers should think about a trade for any player averaging more points than Douglas-Roberts so that offensively they have more breathing room when their defense struggles.
