Los Angeles Lakers Should Strongly Consider Trading Ryan Kelly
The Los Angeles Lakers signed Ryan Kelly this offseason to a two-year deal worth more than $3 million. While it may seem like a bargain, Kelly’s inability to contribute so far leads to questions about whether it was the right move. He has struggled immensely with injuries since entering the league, and now will be out again for an extended period of time. The Lakers should explore a trade for Kelly that can get them an additional asset, or possibly a veteran player to help provide leadership.
Kelly finished last season strong, gaining more confidence in his shot, and become a more effective offensive player. He started demonstrating the outside shooting that earned him the “stretch-four” label, and also showed strong passing skills. He was surprisingly effective on defense, utilizing his length to create turnovers. His play on the court proved that he had the potential to become a rotation player, which led to the Lakers signing him past his current deal.
However, the Lakers now find themselves struggling to stay competitive and lacking in leadership. They won their previous two games, which provides them hope, but there is no doubt that they are missing pieces on their roster. Kelly’s youth and contract makes him an attractive trade piece, especially for a team looking to create salary cap space. The Lakers might not be able to get a star player in return, but they can certainly add a veteran who can help add a much-needed presence to the locker room. They may even be able to get a future draft pick, although that will be difficult to accomplish.
Kelly has shown that he can be a productive player for the team, but they should still try to gauge what the interest is for his services around the league. He has struggled to stay healthy, and his outside shooting from the power forward position is not necessarily what coach Byron Scott is looking for from that position. The Lakers are still far away from where they need to be, and should be proactive in finding ways to improve their roster.
