Will Injuries Allow the Miami Heat To Find Their Identity?

It’s nowhere near the crunch time portion of the NBA season and not close to panic mode — not even for Philadelphia 76ers fans, who are privy to their team’s plans. However, that does not mean that league-wide uncertainty is not running rampant.

For instance, a team like the Miami Heat still look like they do not know what they have in their roster. And it’s possible that will be a problem for them for the entire 82 games, or as the South Florida Sun-Sentinel’s Ira Winderman puts it, until they can get healthy:

“With [Danny] Granger and [Josh] McRoberts contributing, and with [Shawne] Williams emerging, and with the possibilities of James Ennis and Shabazz Napier, the depth could be far more reliable at midseason than it is now.”

What will be interesting is if the full-time presence of an entire roster will pause the infusion of Miami’s youth movement and have their energy and enthusiasm regulated back to the bench — except Napier, who has been getting the bulk of fourth quarter point guard minutes to figure out if he can sustain his good play long enough to make Norris Cole expendable.

But bigger than that is the thought of how everyone will blend?

The presumption is that once McRoberts is healthy and has his timing together, Williams will find himself in his assumed offseason role as the designated stretch-four off of the bench. However, no one seems to be thinking about how much of a halt that will put to his surprising play.

Yes, the Heat gave McRoberts a starter’s contract, but his lack of confidence and hesitation to shoot cannot be compared to Williams’ 11 PPG and 51 percent three-point shooting. And who says that any of that production would come without Dwyane Wade or Chris Bosh both on the floor to draw all of the opposition’s attention?

While each concern is surely valid, the likelihood of the Heat going from infirmary ridden to suddenly healthy for the rest of the year is highly unlikely. So those good problems to worry about are guaranteed to be nothing more than speculation and mind games for an interesting season.
