New York Knicks, Philadelphia 76ers are Both Dysfunctional, But in Different Ways

If there’s one thing the New York Knicks and Philadelphia 76ers had going during a game on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, it is that both are bad NBA teams.

The one difference is that the Sixers are actually trying to be bad and the Knicks have just fallen into it.

Give both teams credit in the Knicks’ 91-83 win over the Sixers, as the Knicks just proved to be better than a team headed to perhaps historically bad levels. The Sixers’ plan, although unstated, is to lose and get high picks, and they do that not by intentionally throwing games, but by signing developmental league players and inserting them into games. The Knicks, on the other hand, have no visions of tanking for high draft picks.

The Knicks’ win did not prove much, but at least was a confidence-builder after coming into the game with a 3-10 record. For the 0-13 Sixers, who have 10 rookies and second-year players on their 15-man roster, the next milestone to avoid is winning before losing 18 in a row, which would be a league record to start the season.

The Sixers, at least from a player’s standpoint, have plenty to prove. One of the Phoenix Suns’ players said they would probably lose to Kentucky and the Sixers got so mad they went out and lost by 26 points to the Suns on Friday night. Still, a one-point loss at the Houston Rockets earlier in the week was probably a better indication that this 0-13 nightmare will probably end someday, but no one knows when that will be.

It did not come on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden and that sound the Knicks made was merely a sigh of relief.
