The general consensus around Sacramento Kings center DeMarcus Cousins has been that he’s a great player with a bad attitude. However, as the 2014-15 NBA regular season has moved forward, Cousins is beginning to shake free of that stigma. As he goes head-to-head against future Hall-of-Famer Tim Duncan tonight, take a look at Cousins’ past, present and future.
While the University of Kentucky product has averaged about 18 points and 10 rebounds per game over his career in the league, Cousins is averaging 23.5 points and 12.6 blocks per game so far this season. “Boogie” Cousins has certainly stepped his game up, but as he matches up against Duncan tonight, another statistic is much more intriguing.
Cousins led the league in technical fouls last season with 16, tied with Blake Griffin and Kevin Durant. While Duncan had his fair share of technical fouls as well, he was tied for 26th in the league with eight during the season. Knowing Duncan’s personality, it’s highly unlikely that he was given too many technical fouls for some outrageous outburst or some obscenity-laced rant. No, Duncan is much quieter on the court than is Cousins, and that’s been a problem for the Kings’ center.
No one is saying that Cousins needs to take a vow of silence on the court (not a horrible idea, though), but if he could do his best to tone it down like so many others have in the past, Cousins could become so much more dominant.
Gone will be the days of getting into Cousins’ head in hopes of technical fouls or ejections. Cousins is currently in 9th place in the league with two technical fouls in 15 games, which isn’t exactly stellar, but shows improvement. The season has been pretty good thus far for the Kings as they remain in playoff contention. If Cousins can stay levelheaded through thick and thin, watch out for this guy to dominate the league.
