The Los Angeles Clippers have been on a roll lately. They are taking the form of a team that all NBA fans have grown to know. The Clippers are currently on a six-game win streak in which they have beaten each team by an average of 18 points per game. The starters now sit on the bench throughout all of the fourth quarter laughing and smiling as they did last season. Although everything is all smiles in Clipper land, there is still an issue that needs to be dealt with: the bench.
With the exception of Jamal Crawford and Spencer Hawes, the Clippers’ bench leaves much to be desired. The starters have been getting it done for the team. They are scoring enough points and giving themselves enough of a cushion to where the bench can come on the floor, miss shots and still win games.
Crawford is averaging 16.9 points per game and Hawes is averaging 7.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The rest of the bench averages a combined 21.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. That is eight players who average fewer points and only 0.4 rebounds more than just one starter. Power forward Blake Griffin is averaging 22.5 points and 7.6 rebounds this season. No one is expecting the bench to produce the way the starters can, but it doesn’t make sense for Crawford and Hawes to be the only reliable bench players after a month of play.
Not every bench player has seen enough playing time to make a difference on the court which is another issue, but in the time that they are on the court, they aren’t producing the desired results. Elite teams like the Clippers need a bench that can not only keep up, but bring something to the table as well.
As it stands right now, the Clippers are a solid seven-man roster that can win games with little to no help. The rest of the team needs to step up their game and contribute.
