The Los Angeles Clippers have some real marksmen when it comes to shooting the three point shot. At this point in the season, there are six players shooting over 35 percent from three. That’s great production, especially considering that most teams in the NBA are lucky to have four players shoot that well. This great shooting has helped them to play better basketball in their last five games.
The Clippers are currently third in the league in three point percentage at 38 percent, and they are second in three pointers made, which is huge since they aren’t playing defense or rebounding as well as they can this season. Most basketball fans are familiar with the phrase “Live by the three, die by the three,” but when you have so many good shooters, this term might not apply. If the Clippers continue to pass the ball well and create wide open three point shot attempts, they might not die by the three. However, the lack of defense might kill your championship dreams.
Based off the eye test, the team moves the ball so well, many times these three point shots are the best option because the player is so open. The Clippers share the ball, and that style has led to better shots, as well as good team chemistry. Ask a New York Knicks fan how well a team gets along with each other when the basketball isn’t shared properly.
The Chris Paul mentality of passing the ball to find a good shot has really sunk in this season. This style of play not only leads to great offensive production and great shooting, but it’s also good for business, too. Sharing the basketball helps attract quality free agents for the future, which seems to be the opposite of what’s happening on the other (more yellow) side of the Staples Center, where the ball is dominated by one player.
Sharing the ball is the main reason why I believe the Clippers are one of the top three offensive teams in the league, and one of the best from three.
