The 2014-2015 season’s start did not how the New York Knicks hoped. The team is well below .500 and at the moment it looks as if they are fighting for a top-five draft pick instead of a playoff spot. There’s a lot of change happening in New York and growing pains are expected, but the Knicks are going nowhere unless they fill up their roster with players that can make an impact.
Right now, the Knicks’ roster is nothing more than Carmelo Anthony, Jose Calderon and a bunch of mid-tier role players. It’s pretty easy to see that the Knicks don’t have the talent that scares opponents. Without a second star on the team, the Knicks have a tendency to force-feed Anthony and put all of their hope into one player instead of moving the ball and finding the open man. A lack of talent and the absence of other impact players makes the Knicks predictable and one-dimensional.
I’m sure Knicks fans are growing impatient and all they can think about is next season — seems like a recurring thought process every year.
It’s simple: The Knicks don’t have the talent to compete with other teams — they haven’t brought in any impact players this season that can help them win right now. I know the Knicks are building for the long-term, but what happens if they strike-out in free agency and draft another potential bust. Nothing is a guarantee and if the Knicks bank on next season, it just gives false hope to a fan base that was expecting a lot more than a sub-.500 this season, yet again.
All of the team’s problems can be placed on a rookie head coach or a new offensive system, but talented players win games and the Knicks don’t have enough of them. Names like Iman Shumpert and Tim Hardaway Jr. are young and have potential, but there is so much pressure on them to produce now because there is no one else.
I hate to say it, but if the Knicks don’t turn things around soon it is going to be an ugly year for Phil Jackson, Derek Fisher and the Knicks. It’s hard to make any major roster changes now because the team has a plan in place for next season, but let’s hope the Knicks can find a way to turn it around this season.
