The Los Angeles Clippers are a quarter of the way through the regular season and the team still has not quite figured out how to play together. When the Clippers’ lineup changes, that is when points and rebounds start falling through the cracks.
After the starters get off the floor, everything starts going downhill. When Doc Rivers starts to substitute in players such as Jordan Farmar, Chris Douglas-Roberts and Glen Davis, it becomes apparent that the team has not learned how to play together.
With every substitution, nothing should change. The Clippers should still keep the same pace whether there are five starters on the floor or just two starters with three bench players. The best teams in the league can play together without a hiccup. The Clippers have yet to figure out that formula.
The Clippers are obviously plagued by an undesirable bench, but even when the rotation has starters out on the floor with some of the bench players, the Clippers lose early leads and have to fight hard for the rest of the game to try and get a favorable outcome. It had been proven multiple times in the season that the Clippers cannot always fight their way back to a win.
Unfortunately for the Clippers, there is no easy or obvious fix to this problem. The team not being able to play together seamlessly could stem from anywhere. Due to Rivers’ rotations, it can be assumed that the scattered play comes from any group of five guys not playing with each other enough.
If they are not playing a significant amount of minutes together, they will not be able to play off of each other as well as some of the other teams in the league.
