Now that the holiday season is right in front of us, there have been a lot of talks regarding NBA teams and their wish lists. It’s the time of year where we are still a month and a half from the trade deadline but talks are heating up. Some teams have even made trades already. The Portland Trail Blazers are not one of them, and I don’t expect they will make a trade this season.
When most people see the line “I don’t expect they will make a trade this season,” they think that the team is all set and believes they have the best chance to win with the guys on their roster. I believe that is fairly true for the Blazers, but there is also much more to it.
The players on the Blazers who have value and would even be in consideration to be traded are Allen Crabbe, Joel Freeland, Meyers Leonard, C.J. McCollum, Thomas Robinson and Dorell Wright. The Blazers will want to build around young players like Crabbe, McCollum and Robinson, so I don’t think they are going anywhere. Freeland makes over $3 million a year, and I don’t think any team is willing to trade for him because of that.
The two interesting players are Leonard and Wright. Leonard makes $2.3 million and Wright makes $3.1 million. The only way a trade would occur with these two is probably a package deal with draft picks. Wright doesn’t have much value as a trade piece, but Leonard is a young center with some potential so that narrows it down to him being the only real trade option for Portland.
The main players to come to mind when discussing trade rumors are K.J. McDaniels (Philadelphia 76ers), Lance Stephenson (Charlotte Hornets), Patrick Patterson (Toronto Raptors) and any big-name player on the Brooklyn Nets. Stephenson and the Nets’ players all have big contracts, therefore it’d be tough to obtain any of them. Patterson doesn’t really fit into the Blazers’ system. Lastly, McDaniels is having a solid rookie campaign, so I doubt Philadelphia would get rid of him, and if they did they would want more than just Leonard and Wright.
Trade rumors come and go in the NBA almost every day. This topic may be revisited in a month or so based on numerous possible outcomes such as injuries, but as of right now, I expect the Blazers to sit tight with their roster.
