It would be hard to believe it if you did not see it with your own eyes. That is the only way to describe what the Miami Heat did against the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night.
It was a game that should have been talked about for Shawne Williams scoring 14 points in a row and hitting more than three-pointers to prove that being one of the team’s lone bright spots means he should be a permanent fixture in the rotation even if he heads to the bench when Chris Bosh returns. Or in all honesty, the night should have been a tune up for Dwyane Wade before the big holiday showdown with LeBron James.
Instead the game was neither Christmas sacrifice nor a way to get the rust off. It was a lesson in how to hit rock bottom — the quintessential basketball version of the most popular kid turning into the class clown two days before the high school reunion. Not only was there embarrassment about their new lifestyle, but as Wade said, “it don’t get no worse than this.”
And that was coming from a man who has been through a 15-win season. Yet that did not stop him from jacking up ill-advised shot after ill-advised shot on his way to 9-for-21 shooting.
Clearly Wade was not the only one. The entire team had two hands in helping the 76ers go on a 41-13 run to turn a 23-point deficit into a five-point lead — and eventual four-point win. They can all share the blame in showcasing stagnant offense and going into an all-out collapse against a three-win team that only had eight players available.
There were no excuses of looking ahead, because the breakdown came with the starters in, not during any garbage time minutes. Give Philadelphia a little credit for their pressure, but not even their status as the NBA steals kings should have resulted in 20 Miami turnovers.
To the world this outcome was a shocker. To Heat fans this was just another day in the team’s process of giving underdogs hope.
