For all of my loyal followers, and I know, I have so many, I wrote an article last night after the Houston Rockets were blown out by the New Orleans Pelicans stating that coach Kevin McHale should move forward Josh Smith back to the Houston bench. The Rockets had gone 1-3 with him in the starting lineup. In the second of a double-header and the night after my article, wouldn’t you know it!? Smith is back on the bench. McHale must have seen my post and said “that seems like a genius idea.”
Alright, I highly doubt McHale read my article, but Smith back on the Rockets bench seems to be the answer as they dismantled the Miami Heat, 115-79. Miami was beaten up and down, left and right. The frontcourt displayed its well-known flaws and the backcourt crapped the bed. It was an all-around embarrassment for the Heat, who showed an array of struggles.
For Houston, it was a greatly needed night of fantastic success and a possible answer to a growing dilemma. Instead of a starter, Smith is much better suited as the sixth man. Frankly, there is nothing wrong with that and Smith should easily come to grips with these terms. He had 12 points and seven rebounds against the Heat, only his second game in double-figures as a Rocket and both came off the bench.
Every successful, championship-caliber team needs a consistent and solid sixth man. For Houston, that player should and is most likely Smith. Even Dwight Howard and James Harden looked like their normal selves with a combined 51 points and 18 rebounds. With a blowout win to right the ship and a new gameplan, the Rockets now embark on a three-game NBA East road trip.
