The Cleveland Cavaliers are finalizing a trade with the Denver Nuggets to acquire long-time target Timofey Mozgov. Cleveland was already in need of a big man before the season-ending Achilles injury to Anderson Varejao, which just made their desperation to acquire a quality center rise even higher.
Denver will reportedly acquire two future first-round picks from the Cavaliers to complete the trade. The price seems steep and is a sure-fire signal Cleveland is doing whatever it can to surround LeBron James with the best supporting cast they can, no matter how it impacts the team’s future.
By exchanging Andrew Wiggins, Anthony Bennett, and picks this summer with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Kevin Love, Cleveland traded away the future for the present, and entered “win-now” mode. That’s exactly how it should be whenever your roster includes an elite player like James, and this trade only increases the need for the team to win it all in 2015.
With the loss of two future first-rounders and Monday’s trade of Dion Waiters for J.R. Smith and Iman Shumpert, Cleveland’s prospects beyond the next couple seasons don’t look quite as promising as before. One thing we have to remember is that LeBron is on just a two-year contract and is likely to leave town again should the Cavaliers fail to win a title in these next two seasons.
Whether or not Mozgov is enough of an upgrade to take the Cavaliers where they need to go is a whole other question. What we do know is that Cleveland is now all-in for the 2015 season.
